Patient receiving spine treatment

You've been told to "just live with it." We disagree.

Most spine pain has a specific, identifiable cause. The problem is that most patients never get that level of diagnosis. Dr. Murphy developed the CRISP® protocol to pinpoint what's driving your pain and why it has persisted, and then to build a treatment plan around you.

Dr. Murphy brings 30+ years of clinical experience and over 100 published studies to every patient visit. That research isn't academic — it directly shapes the care you receive.

Precise diagnosis

We find the specific source — disc, joint, muscle, nerve — or come up with a plan to investigate

Research-backed treatment

Every action step is chosen based on evidence — what's proven to work for your specific condition.

Built for independence

You get the tools to get and stay well. I not only treat you, I also empower you.

You don't have to keep living in pain.

Dr. Donald R. Murphy

My patients come first. Everything else I do — the research, the teaching, the writing — exists to help me better help them.

Dr. Donald R. Murphy, DC, FRCC

I bounced around from doctor to doctor, and I thought I had to give up the nursing career I love so much. Then I saw Dr. Murphy and he saved my career after other doctors had given up.

C.C.

Providence, RI

I had over a year of back pain so bad I could hardly exercise. I saw MDs and chiropractors without help. I saw Dr. Murphy and he immediately diagnosed the problem and gave me tools to self-treat it along with his hands-on treatments. Within a couple of weeks, I was back to normal.

Goal: your full recovery

Is this what you're dealing with?

If you're living with spine pain, you're not alone — and you're not stuck. I get to the bottom of it.

Every condition below has a cause. We work together to help you overcome it as quickly as possible.

Low Back Pain

The most common spine disorder. I work to identify the specific cause and provide targeted treatment.

Neck Pain

From acute injuries to chronic conditions, including whiplash. Evidence-based solutions that address the root cause.

Sciatica

Radiating leg pain from nerve compression. We find the source and help you get past it.

Herniated Discs

Disc herniations causing nerve irritation. Most respond well to conservative care - the right kind.

Common questions

Straightforward answers about what to expect, how we work, and what makes this different.

No. You can see Dr. Murphy without referral. While many of his patients are referred from PCPs or specialists, he is a primary spine practitioner, which means he can be the first doctor you see for a spine problem.

I do a thorough history and hands-on examination to find out what's causing your pain and why it has persisted. There's a good likelihood that you'll leave knowing what the problem is and what to do about it.

Most spine conditions can be accurately diagnosed through clinical examination alone. We only recommend imaging if additional information is needed — not as a routine step. This saves you time, money, and unnecessary radiation.

No, I seldom use high-velocity manipulation (“cracking”). If you are concerned, let me know and I will only use slow, non-“cracking” methods.

It depends on your condition and how you respond. Our goal is to help you get better as quickly as possible, then to hand you simple tools to stay that way. We promote patient empowerment rather than dependency.

This practice is cash-only. But we can provide you with the information needed to submit to your insurance carrier.

I often work hand-in-hand with physical therapists. As a primary spine practitioner, I often serve as a bridge between primary care and physical therapy. Some of what I do overlaps with MDs and other overlaps with PT. Anyone can feel free to try PT first. If the problem resolves - mission accomplished! I often see patients in whom the problem has not improved or resolved in PT, and I help them get on track. Or anyone can see me first, and I can coordinate with PT, if necessary. Either way, we are all here to help you!

I focus on helping patients with pain get and stay better. I don't do routine adjustments and seldom use high-velocity methods (“cracking”).

CRISP® stands for Clinical Reasoning in Spine Pain®. It's a structured method for finding exactly what's causing your spine pain — physical, emotional, and lifestyle factors — and building a treatment plan that addresses all of them. It's used in clinics and universities worldwide.
